What age do you have to be to buy lighters?

There is no legal minimum age to purchase a lighter, but you do have to be at least 18 years of age to purchase butane refills. This is a good rule-of-thumb for most stores. However, it is always a good idea check the store policy. Ask your parent or guardian if you are unsure of the law. A retailer won’t sell lighters to minors, so don’t risk getting hurt.

While there is no federal law prohibiting the sale of lighters to minors, California’s law does. California’s law does not have a minimum age for purchasing lighters. Currently, retailers are not allowed to sell these items to children under the age of 18. Although this is illegal, most stores won’t sell lighters or other items to minors because they fear that minors might harm themselves or others.
