Lowering your energy usage this autumn

By Cristiana , in Lifestyle , at October 28, 2022

Energy usage tends to be lower in the summer – longer and warmer days mean that we use less electricity and heating. Autumn and winter are a different game altogether. The nights grow cold, the days are shorter, and energy usage creeps up, as we huddle indoors to keep warm and cosy.

A lot of people don’t think about their gas and electricity usage until they get their bill at the end of the month. And, especially during colder months like October and November, the total amount can come as a bit of a shock.

So, to avoid any unpleasant surprises and to help you keep your usage low, we’ve rounded up four nifty tips that’ll help you keep your energy usage in check.

1. Use heating controls

Using your thermostat to your advantage can be super helpful in keeping your heating bills down. Have a timer on your thermostat? Why not set it so that the heating comes on when you’re at home, and it stays off when you’re out or at work.

Another useful heating control is the radiator thermostat.  If you have radiator thermostats, you can program them to turn off the radiators in rooms that aren’t in use. This way, you’re not wasting money heating rooms that are unoccupied. If you still have old, un-programmable thermostats, consider upgrading to newer models.

2. Invest in double glazing

Double glazing can be one of the most effective ways to lower your electricity bills. This is because it helps you keep your home warmer and more insulated.

Many homeowners don’t realise that upgrading to double glazing can be an effective way to lower their electricity bill.

It’s a great investment for your home – not only will it make it quieter, but it can also help lower your energy bills by reducing the amount of heat lost through the windows in winter and the amount of heat gained through the windows in the summer. It’s a small cost to pay for such a big reward!

3. Get a new boiler

It’s important to maintain your boiler, making sure that it’s in good condition so that it can function efficiently. Many energy companies suggest switching to a newer, more efficient boiler as it will save you money in the long run.

Boilers work by converting hot water into steam which is then circulated in the pipes throughout your home. If you’re using an old boiler, you’re probably spending a lot of money on your energy bill. With a new, more efficient boiler, you’ll be able to lower your bills significantly.

4. Switch to new energy providers

Lastly, switching to new energy providers can lower your bills significantly.

If you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal on your electricity usage, you should consider switching energy providers. You might be able to find a provider that offers better deals than your current provider. This can save you a lot of money on your electricity bill over the long run!

One of the best ways you could lower your energy bills this autumn is by opting for a bundle. Bundling your bills with another service is an affordable way to save money. For example, bundle your electricity with gas, mobile or broadband services.
