Types Of Residential Roofing Products

There is a multitude of different types of residential roofing. Residential roofing systems provide many options for those interested in repairing their roofs or building new ones. Asphalt, slate, wood shakes, clay tiles, ceramic tile, metal shingles, and green roofing are just a few of the choices. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to consider them carefully before making your final decision.

Residential roofing materials are typically designed for steep angle application. Commercial roofing materials used for this type of application are typically engineered shingles. Other materials used are roofing shingles of various types, such as wood shakes, clay tiles, ceramic tile, and metal roofing.

The cost of installing residential roofs depends upon the materials chosen, the roof design chosen, and the skill of the roofer. Professional roofers will generally charge more than residential roofing companies for installation work. Even with professional installation, residential roofing companies can often do the job themselves for less money and in a shorter amount of time. On the other hand, residential roofing can be a complicated project requiring access to heavy equipment.

Residential roofing products vary widely. One type of residential roofing product is asphalt shingles. These shingles are made from asphalt, generally, but not always, which is why you may find them referred to as asphalt shingle roofs. However, asphalt shingles differ from asphalt roofing products in that they are not “tacky” in the sense that they have a waxy layer on top. The layers of waxy coating provide an additional barrier to moisture. These types of shingles are very durable and have a long useful life expectancy.

Another type of residential roofing product is asphalt-based composite underlayment. This is another very durable product, although this type of product will not last as long as its asphalt-based cousins. Asphalt-based roofing systems will generally last longer due to their superior strength. For the same price as asphalt shingles or better, these residential roofing products will outlast asphalt-based underlayments.

Other types of residential roofing products include the flat or floating type and the more common and expensive fiberglass or ceramic tile-based products. Fiberglass is the strongest, most durable, and most aesthetically pleasing type of product available. This product is made from expanded polystyrene foam, which, when sprayed onto a flat roof surface, creates a tough barrier that prevents water from reaching the interior of the home. The use of this product in residential homes is widespread for its ability to resist the most extreme conditions.
