By Cristiana , in General , at March 25, 2023

In 2021 the number of domestic and international airline flights was 22.2 million globally. Getting through airport security can be tricky for even experienced travelers.

TSA protocols are constantly changing, and things that might work today won’t work tomorrow. For this reason, inexperienced travelers need all the help they can get.

At the same time, though, many people feel it’s beneath them to follow advice or tips. This could be a mistake. Getting through security at airports can be challenging but far from impossible.

Here are some airport tips to help make the process easier.

Pack Essential Requirements

When it’s your first time flying, pack your passport, driver’s license, birth certificate, and boarding pass. Other essential items include liquids, medications, spare change, and electronics. Ensure all drinks are placed in transparent bags under 3.4 ounces each to pass through security.

Also, pack the necessary medications in a bag that is within easy reach and pay attention to the end dates. Spare changes for machines or for making small purchases are always helpful. Electronic items such as laptops, phones, and cameras should be placed in easy-to-open containers to quickly pull out of a bag.

Wear Easy to Remove Shoes

Shoes that don’t need you to tie or buckle them will be much easier to take on and off when going through airport security. Slip-ons, sandals, or simple sneakers are usually best. This should help ease the time spent in security and ensure your journey is stress-free.

With some preparation, getting through an airport security checkpoint can be easier than expected. Furthermore, if your shoes have metal, such as buckles, ensure that these are easy to remove.

Arrive Early to Avoid Long Lines

When going to the airport, you must arrive early and ensure you’re prepared for security check-ins. Giving yourself extra time ensures you won’t have to stand in long lines and wait in frustration. Aim to arrive at the airport about 90 minutes before your flight for domestic travel and three hours for an international flight.

Consider booking an airport car service, for example, to arrive early and avoid long lines. This will give you ample time to go through the check-in process, security screenings, and boarding. The service also keeps track of flight details to prevent inconvenience.

Remain Calm and Respectful

Security personnel is there to keep all passengers safe, so you must stay cooperative. Ensure all your belongings are easily accessible and organized, so there is no confusion when an item is asked for.

Be prepared to show your identification and boarding pass when prompted. Speak in a low voice and keep your hands visible at all times. Show that you follow directions promptly and stay polite and patient when communicating with all staff involved.

Be Mindful of Security at Airports

Traveling can be stressful, so make sure to be prepared for security at airports. Before flying, check to see if your airport has an app to make the process easier. Take these tips and have a successful, stress-free experience at the airport.
