Before we move forward, it is time to move to the high school basics. What is a tire? A tire is a circular rubber that causes motion due to friction on the surface which helps in carrying and transferring the load of the vehicle. In simple words, it is the most important part of the vehicle which makes contact with the road.

Materials of Tire:

Each tire producer has different ways of manufacturing tires. Talking generally, tires are made using rubber which includes 19 per cent natural and 24 per cent synthetic rubber and also 200+ other raw materials.

Structure:

Before we explain the types of tires, you need to understand the structure of tire, so you know how each tire functions. The tire consists of the following components:

  • Tread: A higher-grip rubber that contacts with the surface of the ground. The pattern on this outer layer is called the tread pattern which increases the friction between the tire and the ground.
  • Sidewall: A rubber used to cover the left and right sidewall of the tire.
  • Casing: A layer in the tire that includes other components of the tire except for the tread and belt system.
  • Bead: An edge of the tire which allows the tire to rest on the rim.
  • Belt system: They are rubber-coated layers of steel that provide stability to the treads of the tire.

Functions of Tire:

The tires are designed to support the weight of the car, absorb shocks on the roads, transmit gravity, torque, and brakes on the road surface. They are also used to maintain and change lanes. To accomplish these four basic functions, tires are made of reinforced rubber and filled with compressed air.

Types of Tires:

There are three criteria for choosing the type of tires. To make sure you choose the right set for yourself. First, think about what type of driving you do on daily basis. Then what are the weather conditions you drive in and lastly what type of vehicle are you going to drive? On these criteria’s there are many different types of tires used for different conditions.

  1. All-Season: These tires are good for optimal conditions in the weather. Their treads are made in such a way that they provide good performance in occasional rain or light snow and they also provide good handling on highways. These tires are not good enough for frequent wet roads and heavy snow.
  2. Summer: These tires have good performance in wet and dry roads in warmer conditions. These tires provide excellent grip and handling in warm weather. These tires are not good enough in rains and heavy snow.
  3. Winter: These tires provide good performance on wet roads in cold conditions. These tires have excellent grips on surfaces covered with snow and ice. These tires have cuts in the rubber which provides more friction on wet and icy roads.
  4. Performance: These tires provide a sense of speed, as well as increased handling and better offset. The performance tires are generally wider, with a lower profile-look, resulting in lower visibility and sound, greater traction, and better road connection.
  5. Touring: These tires are designed to deliver comfortable rides and provide flexible handling.
  6. Track and Competition: These tires are not used for daily driving. These tires provide constant road contact in dry conditions and provide extreme performance.
  7. Truck: The type of truck tire you need depends on the type of truck you are driving and the activities you are doing on it. Do you drive in off-road conditions, such as snow and mud? Different truck tire types can meet your needs wherever you drive.
  • Highway: These are built which such tread patterns that are designed to handle heavier loads. They are built with sturdy, enhanced compound and tread patterns to withstand unequal wear and provide a smooth ride throughout the season.
  • Performance: These are similar to highway truck tires but they provide higher speed, more braking, and handling conditions in all seasons.
  • All-terrain: These have more tread patterns to withstand light mud and sand.
  • Mud terrain: These have aggressive tread patterns to withstand off-road conditions like heavy mud and deep snow.

There is a lot of variety in truck tires. To find out more, you can search truck tires online and visit a tire manufacturer’s website like Falken. They have a lot of variety in truck tires, each intended for a different purpose.
